KCC Adult Youth Minister Notes
April 13, 2008 - 8th Grade
Dear parents,
Today we continued our study of Christian morality by beginning consideration of the Ten Commandments and looking closely at the first three commandments which deal with honoring God.
Session Plan
We began the session by dividing into teams of two or three and looking at the listing of the Ten Commandments on page 373 of their books. The youth were informed that the number "10" recently was discovered to be an error, that actually there were only nine commandments. Each team was instructed to determine which commandment was falsely added to the list and to defend their choice. The other teams were invited to challenge their choice. We tried to see the totality of the Commandments. Then we brainstormed on all the things that are important to us, the things we "can't live without." We also looked at a typical day, how we used the time in the day and what that says about our priorities. Then we read the first three commandments from Exodus 20:2-11. We reflected on how we can easily make "other gods" of the things that are important to us or our priorities, no matter how good the things or priorities might be. We closed by praying together the prayer on page 238 in their books.
At Home
Take the time to read chapter 24 on the first three commandments. Give particular attention to the sidebar on page 243 on the Sabbath and on page 244 on controlling our tongues. Talk about the content of the sidebars during a family meal.
Points to Remember
First Commandment: I am the Lord your God: you shall not have strange gods before me
Second Commandment: You shall not take the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
Third Commandment: Remember to keep holy the Lord's Day.
Atheism is the denial of God's existence and God's loving and ongoing presence in our lives.
Sincerely,
Steve, Mary, Renae, and Bill
